All Season & Summer Tyres Explained

When looking at new tyres, especially for the change in seasons, you have the choice of winter, all season and summer tyres. You may have questions about the different tyre types that are available and we answer these in this article as well as help you if you are considering changing to summer tyres this year.

  • All Season tyres are designed to be good performers in all weather conditions.

  • Summer tyres are designed for temperatures that do not consistently go under 7°C and they are therefore suited for these conditions.

  • Winter tyres are suited for consistent conditions under 7°C which means that they aren’t hugely needed in many parts of the UK but you may still want to invest in them - especially considering trends for more extreme weather conditions.

Winter Tyres vs Summer Tyres

Winter tyres are better suited for countries where you experience heavy snow and rainfall as they are designed to excel in these conditions. There may be certain conditions in which you want to consider winter tyres but the UK currently doesn’t experience extreme conditions under 7°C for very long periods. Regular trips to other areas of the UK such as Scotland - you may want to consider winter tyres, especially for the highlands.

Summer tyres are well suited for the hotter summer months and we do see regular summer temperatures exceeding 7°C for extended periods in the summer. So this is why it’s a great idea to consider summer tyres if you are looking for a replacement in the UK.

Benefits of All Season Tyres

You can expect higher performance in summer conditions for summer tyres but all-season tyres are great all-rounders. There are many benefits for both types of tyres and as we discussed, winter tyres are likely to be unsuitable in certain areas of the UK where the weather is consistently milder. All-season tyres allow you to balance performance for all situations and remove the need to replace tyres so these are also an option if you are looking for good all-rounders. With summer tyres being specifically designed for the summer months, they are a fanatic consideration for a range of vehicles.

Investing in Summer Tyres This Summer

Summer tyres are a great consideration for the summer as we have discussed. They are specifically built to perform better in summer conditions on hotter roads. Summer tyres are often the usual tyres that would be purchased and are offered by all major manufacturers. We don’t get extreme winter conditions where we legally need winter tyres installed so summer tyres can also be used as all-round performance tyres but in some situations, they may not be the best suited for the condition of roads so you may want to consider all season tyres if this is a concern.

It’s important to consider the overall average temperature of the UK, the average rainfall for stopping distance and the stopping distance of each different condition. As we are sadly seeing increases in rain fall and flooding - it may become more effective to move towards all season tyres instead of summer tyres in the future.
