Undoubtedly, the number of electric vehicles on the road in the UK is increasing faster each year. Although electric cars were restricted because of their hefty price tags, they are now much more affordable which means that it’s more likely that electric cars have either surpassed their 3-year grace period before their MOT is due or this is the first year in which your MOT test is due. Electric cars are no different to combustion-powered cars. They require a mandatory MOT test every year after the 3rd year of registration and regular servicing is recommended to ensure that your car is in great condition and you don’t encounter any nasty surprises when it comes round to your first or next MOT.
This article covers everything that you will need to know about the servicing of a electric car as well as how an MOT check differs from an electric car to a ‘traditional’ car and why you still need to consider servicing for your electric vehicle.

How is an Electric Vehicle MOT Different from a ‘Traditional’ Vehicle MOT?
As discussed, you still need to adhere to the combustion-powered cars guidelines when arranging for an MOT test. 3 years after the original registration, you need to arrange for an MOT test every year. But how does the test differ?
- An electric car MOT does not need to carry out certain parts of the test such as the emissions testing and noise testing.
- Apart from these tests, the MOT test is the same and this is important as it follows the government guidelines on what is required in ensuring that cars are as safe as possible on the road.
- All other aspects will be tested. Tests such as the operation of the vehicle, lights, tyres and the other core elements of the MOT test.
Your car will still abide by the same rules. If your car is deemed unfit to drive then you will either have to leave your car at the garage or you may be able to drive away before your MOT expires. Once your car has passed you have another year until your test is due again.
