When Does My Car Need an MOT?
The first MOT test will be required when your vehicle is 3 years old. If your vehicle is at least 3 years old then the test will be required every year. The certificate must be renewed every year going forward.
Can My MOT Be Done Early?
If you want to be organised and get your MOT done earlier than the expiry date, there is no reason why you can’t. You can renew your MOT for up to one month (minus a day) before the certificate expires and still have the same renewal date next year.
If you are looking to get the test done prior to this month, the certificate will be valid for a year from the date of the test when it was passed.
What Do I Do If My MOT Has Expired?
If your certificate has expired, it is illegal to drive your vehicle. If you are found driving the vehicle with no valid MOT you could face a very large fine which may involve points on your license. However, there are a couple of exceptions to this rule:
- Driving to a pre-booked MOT test
- Driving to and from somewhere to get your vehicle repaired

What Does the MOT Test Check?
All MOT tests must be conducted in line with the DVSA guidelines to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy. The key components that are checked during the test include Lights, Steering, Suspension, Wipers, Windscreen, Fuel System, Tyres, Brakes and the Body Work. How Long Does the MOT Test Take?
There is no exact amount of time that the test will take but on average it will usually take around 45 minutes to an hour to complete all the relevant checks required. Once the MOT test has been done you will be notified and made aware of any advisories and failures if your vehicle has failed to pass the test. You may then need to look at repairs and a re-test.
How Do I Pass the MOT Test?
There is no guarantee your vehicle will pass the MOT test, however, there are several different things you can keep on top of to give it the best chance of passing. Regularly check your tyres, mirrors, test your horn and flag anything that is glaringly obvious to your local garage. You can also get your car serviced regularly, recommended every 12,000 miles or 12 months. Combining a regular service with the mandatory MOT test will certainly keep your vehicle running for longer and save you money.
