Ensure You Are Ready Leading Up to Your MOT Test
Leading up to your MOT test - make sure that you have serviced your car that year. We recommend that you service your car at least once a year and in between your latest and next MOT. Servicing allows you to understand the current condition of your car and this can prepare you for any nasty surprises when it’s time for your car to get tested. Ensure that you are prepared for the month of testing as well! You can carry out the test up to a month in advance. MOT Test - Preparation Checklist
- Ensure that your car is ready for the inspection. Make sure that your car is fully accessible and that the tester or testers are able to fully access the back seats as they need to carry out seatbelt checks.
- Ensure that you avoid mistakes such as not having any screenwash as this can fail your MOT. Ensure that lights are operating correctly and other small issues that can instantly fail your MOT test.
- Tyres are another point at which you can fail your MOT test and is one of the most common reasons for failures alongside failure with your lights. You must have a tread depth of 1.6mm or more and the tyres must be in suitable condition. Your spare tyre also needs to conform to road legislation as if you have to use it - it’s imperative that this is also safe to use on the road.
- There are a number of other visual checks that you can carry out on your own which is another preparation task that you can undertake. Checks such as inspecting your exhaust pipe for visible erosion, the horn is working, the windscreen wipers operating correctly, no sharp edges on the bodywork that could harm a pedestrian and checks for chips or cracks on the area which your wipers cover on the windscreen.
- Arrange for service before your MOT - if you have the means to do so - some motorists prefer to have a service before an MOT or have both at the same time. This means that you have had the checks carried out before any potential MOT issues. If you experience an issue that would have failed you on service - you can get this rectified before the actual MOT test is carried out.
