Summer is well and truly here, and with the school holidays nearing, many of you will probably be looking into going away on holiday at some point during the 6 weeks. A common way for people to go away, especially in Europe, is to take a road trip. The drives may be long and tiring, however, it is a fantastic way to see all the sights of different countries, particularly if you are looking to cross through a few on the way to your final destination.
Countries such as France, Spain and Italy are popular contenders when taking a road trip from the UK. A drive from London to Paris will only take you just over 6 hours, so if you are not looking to go too far, it may be the perfect option for you and those you are travelling with.
Read on to find out our best tips on how to ensure your road trip is a total success!
Organisation is Key
It is essential that your trip is well planned and organised, otherwise you will be driving around like a headless chicken! There is nothing wrong with being spontaneous but you should thoroughly consider putting together some sort of structure. This will save you heaps of time and also provide you with a base for what you plan to do, which route you wish to take etc.
Check Your Vehicle
You should also make sure that your vehicle is prepared for the extensive driving required. It is recommended that you get your car serviced or at least checked out before taking it on such a long drive. A car mechanic will be able to check all elements of your car, ensuring that there are no issues before you set off. Things such as your tyres, brakes and coolant will likely be the most important things to check if you are unable to take your vehicle to a garage.
Take an Emergency Pack
An emergency pack consisting of first aid, blankets, water and jump leads never go amiss. You never know when you are going to come up against a problem, so it’s always best to be prepared in case something bad happens. Of course, the likelihood of anything happening is always low but an emergency pack will give you that extra peace of mind.
Plan to Stop Every So Often
Driving and travelling, in general, is very tiring. Planning regular stops during your trip is essential in keeping your mind and body in good shape. You should aim to stop at least every 3 hours and take a short break. You can find various service stations and garages on Google Maps so be sure to note them down and plan a rough idea of when you wish to stop. You could also share driving duties with your other family members (or friends if you are travelling with friends,) as long as they are insured to drive the vehicle. This will maximise the amount of distance you can cover without it being dangerous.
Be Prepared to Improvise
We all know that things that go wrong sometimes, so be prepared to make a change of plan if necessary. For example, if there is a problem with your accommodation, do you have a backup plan? Do you have a spare tyre in case one of yours blows out? Consider all possible scenarios and be prepared to re-organise a part of your trip if you need to.
The most important point of all is to make sure you enjoy yourself! A holiday is meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, so be sure to have lots of fun. No matter what you are going this summer, we hope you have a fantastic time!
